Dietotherapy (Ilaj-bil-Ghiza) is one of the four fundamental modes of treatment in Unani Medicine, alongside regimenal therapy (Ilaj-bil-Tadbeer), pharmacotherapy (Ilaj-bil-Dawa), and surgery (Ilaj-bil-Yad). It involves the therapeutic use of food and dietary regulation to maintain health, prevent disease, and treat various ailments. Unani scholars classified foods according to their temperament (Mizaj) — hot, cold, moist, or dry — and matched them to the individual's constitution, age, season, and state of health.
Unani dietotherapy emphasizes the concept of Kammiyat (quantity) and Kaifiyat (quality) of food, along with the correct timing and combination of foods to ensure proper digestion (Hazm) and avoid the formation of morbid matter (Akhlat-e-Fasida) in the body. Special dietary recipes were developed for various conditions, using easily available ingredients such as grains, pulses, vegetables, fruits, milk products, and select spices, prepared through specific traditional methods to preserve their therapeutic properties. This application brings together such time-tested Unani food recipes to promote awareness of this valuable dietary heritage and support its practical application in modern preventive and promotive healthcare.
